10 Practical Fall Décor Ideas for a Seasonal Refresh
10 Practical Fall Décor Ideas for a Seasonal Refresh
There is nothing quite like fall in Alberta. It’s really one of the best seasons. As the air becomes crisp and we spend more time indoors, it’s an ideal time to refresh your space and transition from one season to the next.
The best fall décor updates are simple: a little more texture, a few extra layers, warmer colours, natural materials, and tasteful seasonal accents that bring in autumn's richness.
Here are ten fall décor ideas to bring that special fall feeling into your home without a major decorating overhaul or filling every surface with pumpkins and orange:
1. Layer Your Front Entryway for Fall
You'll hear about layering many times in our fall décor recommendations, so we will start with your entryway. The quintessential way to decorate for autumn is with a beautifully styled front step. Thoughtful selections can work for the whole season, so you don’t have to keep redecorating for Halloween and Thanksgiving.
Start with one focal point, such as a statement wreath, tall planter, mirror, or piece of artwork, then add smaller elements with different textures and heights around it. The goal is to make the space feel warm and considered without crowding it.
For a layered fall entryway, mix and match any of the following items to your liking:
● Statement Wreath: Think fall leaves, pine cones, soft burgundies, or muted florals.
● Ceramic Planters: We recommend something with height and structure, using ornamental grasses or branches. With Calgary’s weather, planters that can handle cooler temperatures will last you much longer than a delicate summer arrangement.
● Doormat: Woven or a classic natural-fibre doormat
● Pumpkins and Gourds (more on that below)
● Cushions for a front bench: Add one or two textured cushions in plaid, rust, camel, deep green, or warm neutrals.
● A simple indoor accent: A small lamp, bowl for keys, candle, vase of branches, or basket for scarves can bring that same seasonal feeling inside.
2. Pumpkins, but Make It Tasteful
In the intro, we mentioned it’s worth not overdoing the pumpkins, but we didn’t say to skip them altogether. Pumpkins and gourds are an easy, affordable, and sustainable way to incorporate some fall into your décor.
To take things one step beyond the classic orange pumpkin, choose a mix of sizes and colours. White, green, and muted orange varieties have a more natural, elevated feel, especially when grouped in threes or fives. Keep the colour palette fairly restrained and let the natural textures of the gourds and pumpkins do the work.
3. Bring Fall Foliage Inside
A big vase of branches cut fresh on your walk around the neighbourhood, or from your local grocery store or florist, is one of the simplest ways to (literally) bring fall indoors. Look for branches with turning leaves, or even just branches with an interesting shape, on your next walk around the neighbourhood. Alberta fall foliage has such a short window, so it is nice to bring some of it inside while it lasts.
Place the vase on a kitchen island, dining table, or entry console. A larger arrangement usually has more impact than several small ones spread around the room. Dried hydrangeas, eucalyptus, and ornamental grasses from a local flower shop are also beautiful options that will last a long time.

4. Bring in Warm, Rich Textiles
Curate fall textiles, or rearrange pieces you already have, to bring warmth and depth to your space.
An easy place to start is with a couple of different cushions for your living room. They can make a room feel completely different. Throw blankets are another easy way to bring in different textiles. Keep them folded over the sofa or in a basket beside a reading chair.
● Materials to Look For: Textiles with texture and weight, like velvet, wool, leather, or bouclé.
● Colours to Look For: Deep olive, warm brown, soft rust, charcoal, and muted plaid are all great for fall.

5. Layer Your Lighting
In the fall, the sun starts setting earlier, which means darker evenings and mornings. Pay attention to dark spots in your home and layer in different types of warm lighting, like table lamps, floor lamps, and sconces. Indirect lighting without exposed bulbs and warmer bulbs create a cozier feel. Relying on overhead lighting alone and using bulbs that produce white light creates a more industrial, office feel.
The end of the sofa, a reading chair, an entry console, or a bedroom corner can all be great places to add a lamp. When choosing a lamp, ceramic, wood, woven, and aged-brass bases are great year-round. A small stack of books or a bowl beside the lamp is usually all that spot needs.

6. Use Your Everyday Kitchen Pieces
Many everyday kitchen items can be repurposed as décor. Put your wooden cutting board against the backsplash. A ceramic bowl of apples or pears, a stack of linen napkins, or a stoneware pitcher on an open shelf adds warmth without creating clutter.
Fall produce is especially nice for this. Pears, apples, walnuts in the shell, and small squash bring in natural colour, and you can use or eat them when you are ready to change things up.

7. Add a Runner to the Dining Table
Adding a linen runner is an easy way to create simple fall table décor. If you choose something warm and neutral in colour, then you can layer other items over top without making things feel cluttered.
Candle holders, a vase, or a low bowl are all things you can layer on top of a runner. Just make sure to keep the arrangement low so everyone can see each other across the table. Brass, amber glass, dark wood, and black iron all add warmth. Pick two materials and repeat them to give the table a more collected look.
Add pears, foliage, or simple grocery-store stems to the bowl for added fall flair, or even a mini pumpkin to tie in our previous tips.
8. Refresh a Coffee Table, Side Table, or Shelf
Take a look at your small-item décor, get rid of anything that is just clutter, stow away anything that was for summer, and swap it out for something for fall. Easy swaps are lamps, coffee-table books, fall candles, small bowls, or a hearty wooden tray.
A tray can hold remotes, coasters, and other everyday items that tend to float around the room. Try to keep the scale simple. One larger book with a candle or bowl beside it has a relaxed feel and leaves plenty of open space for coffee cups, feet, or game night.

9. Switch Out the Hand Towels
Hand towels are a small but powerful way to add fall décor to your space, and relatively inexpensive. They make a bathroom or kitchen feel instantly refreshed next to a pumpkin spice hand soap.
Choose a deeper colour or a more textured fabric, like deep green, warm brown, rust, charcoal, or a woven stripe for a classic fall look.

10. Give Your Bed an Extra Layer
Your bed is an easy place to make the seasonal shift. A quilt or soft blanket folded across the end brings warmth and makes the whole room look more like fall.
Choose something that works with your current bedding so you can use it in other cold seasons well beyond fall. Warm white, taupe, moss green, and soft brown are all versatile options. A few textured pillow shams can have the same effect if your bedding is already layered.
This quick change makes a big difference. Pick a few pieces that suit your space, keep the materials natural, and build the layers from there.
